Pinterest call itself a 'visual discover engine' and is ahead of the game for visual search
Pinterest is most popular with women who use it to get inspired, find products to buy and discover new brands.
Pinterest has one of the highest 'single sitting' time on the platform....i.e. folks stay on the platform for a long time!
Although Pinterest is the 4th most popular platform, it's continuing to grow fast. So perhaps now is the moment to up your Pinterest game or start to use it for the first time. Ideal for businesses selling products, although establishing yourself as an expert works too, Pinterest might also be a great platform for your business if it's women who buy from you. If your business is all about image and inspiration, the Pinterest is also an ideal place to be.
If you're new to Pinterest, then here's what it's all about in a few simple words....
Imagine that you're sharing your business as an image board or a digital shop window. You will delight your customers with stunning images and inspire them to drive quickly to your online shop, website or blog. You can label and categorise your images to help people find what they're looking for and users can follow your brand as well as specific 'boards' which contain what they love. Best of all, your content stays there for a long time. Users can both pin or save their favourite content to their own boards or easily discover content that you may have shared 12 months ago.
Here's a glossary of terms:
Pin - is the term used for all content that is shared and could be an image, video, infographic etc that links back to its original source e.g. your website, blog or video channel.
Pinner - what we call those who use Pinterest
Re-Pin - when a user saves or pins a pin that they didn't create to one of their own boards
Rich Pin - a pin with additional information including for Apps, Articles, Recipes and Products.
Boards - can be created by businesses or users. Imagine a virtual 'mood board' where your customers can create their dream gift list or where you could add themed, seasonal or single product boards.
How to use Pinterest successfully:
Make sure you've set up a business account to get all the key features you need e.g. insights, advertising capabilities and the chance to use all types of pins. Make sure that it is properly connected to your website by following the set up instructions or going back to settings.
Before you post, think about who your audience is, what they might want/need most and how you can create inspiring boards or pins related to what you do.
Plan where you want pinners to go when they land on a pin. Are you sending them to your shop, your inspiring blog or perhaps different areas of your website?
Connect your business account to your other key platforms e.g. Etsy or Instagram to help your fans discover more about your business
Pin perfectly by ensuring that your preview image is of great quality, attractive and that the pin has a destination link. Also include some description that includes your key words and hashtags. For example, if you're showing off a hand made mug you will need to include this words, the colour, how it's made etc.
Start to create collections of pins on boards that inspire. This could be seasonal or around a topic. Name each board so that it's easy to understand what it is e.g. handmade inspiration for the garden or Christmas gifts that matter.
Make your boards attractive to follow with guides or ideas that fans will want to return to regularly.
Plan to pin consistently and consider using a colour palette or overlaid logos to help your fans find you more quickly.
Engage with comments that fans may leave on your pins.
