In celebration of Earth Day, let's explore some simple sustainability steps that will have a real impact for your business.
Sustainability is a central strategic pillar for any micro business but implementing meaningful change can feel overwhelming and even out of reach.
Choose global first - instead of feeling like you're doing lots of little sustainability bits all over the place (which are important!), harness more strategy by aligning those action with 2 or 3 UNSDGs. Working with the UN Sustainable Development Goals means that you can bring together all those action under some meaningful and globally recognised headings. Take a look at the 17 goals with useful links and ideas here.
Go for Zero - despite the daunting goal of getting to 'net zero', it's now never been easier to track your CO2 and measure your progress. Why? Because reducing waste, energy use and unnecessary fossil fuel use is still a central tenet of sustainability. Search on Google for free trackers including EQM which we have a partnership with to support your journey.
Share resources - in a world gone bonkers and when micros have never needed community more, why not pool resources to reduce costs and wasteful consumption? Ideas might include printers, equipment, occasional use machinery/furniture or even spaces.
Share your journey - so often businesses wait to be 'more perfect' in their greenness before they start to market their credentials. It's unlikely any of us will ever be perfectly sustainable because things are ever changing but more importantly, your customers and stakeholder want to see progress. Start by sharing your ambition then be open about progress. This makes your sustainable actions more meaningful and authentic. For example you may have started by auditing your suppliers but share that you're working towards your other goals, while sharing stories along the way. Read our story here!
