Earth Day is a powerful reminder that every action counts when it comes to protecting our planet. Certainly my mission is the help business do better for people, places and planet and forms the heart of all our decision making.
For micro business owners, adopting sustainable practices is not only good for the environment but can also improve efficiency, reduce costs, and attract customers who share your values and goals. As I write, it's Earth Day, so why not explore practical, easy to implement strategies that small micro business owners can use to be the pebble in the water and celebrate Earth Day with meaningful change.

Why Sustainability Matters for Micro Businesses
Sustainability isn’t just about the planet, but about people, communities & finances and so much more. Increasingly, customers, suppliers and stakeholders care more about how businesses operate than just what they do or provide.
More sustainable practices can:
Reduce costs (especially energy, waste and materials)
Attract loyal customers
Improve reputation and trust
Future‑proof your business in an ever unpredictable world.
Best of all? Embedded sustainability helps micro business owners align their work with their values - an essential.

Start with Energy Efficiency
Energy use is a major factor in a business’s environmental impact. Micro businesses can reduce their carbon footprint by:
Use buying power: Switch to a renewable energy tariff if you haven’t already
Switching to LED lighting: LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs and last longer.
Unplugging devices when not in use: Many electronics draw power even when turned off.
Using energy-efficient appliances: Look for 4-5 star equipment when replacing old devices or better still, share with your business community.
Installing programmable thermostats: These help control heating and cooling, reducing wasted energy.
How you use energy: If you work from home, review your heating schedule
Choose Sustainable Materials and Packaging
Micro businesses often rely on packaging for shipping or product presentation but this can be applied to any office supply purchasing too. Choosing sustainable options can make a big difference:
Consider if there is an alternative to buying new packaging/materials at all.
Use recycled or biodegradable packaging instead of plastic.
Source materials locally to reduce transportation emissions.
Offer refillable or reusable containers for products like soaps or food items.
Encourage customers to bring their own bags or containers.
Reduce Waste Through Smart Practices
Waste reduction saves money and helps the environment of course but think in a circular way about all that you purchase, use and get rid of. Consider these steps:
Conduct a waste audit to identify what your business throws away most.
Is your waste someone else's dream material? Get connected with your local community.
Donate unsold but usable products to local charities.
Reduce paper use or go paper free while carefully considering your digital use impacts too.
Support Sustainable Suppliers
Micros are all part of an eco system and small does not mean less powerful. Choosing suppliers who prioritise sustainability strengthens your business’s green credentials & builds better communities:
Consider suppliers who use renewable energy or sustainable practices.
Align your values with those of your suppliers.
Choose suppliers with transparent environmental policies.
Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste.
Understand your suppliers supply chain - who are they trading with?
Show off your suppliers to your customers to show how well you audit!
Engage Customers in Your Sustainability Journey
I really don't believe that you need to wait to be more sustainable before you share what you do. Micros have important stories to tell and 5.7 million of us can make a huge difference. Remember you could be the inspiration someone needs. Engage them by:
Sharing your sustainability efforts on your website.
Hosting Earth Day events or workshops on eco-friendly topics.
Offering incentives for sustainable behaviours.
Asking for feedback on how your business can improve its green efforts.
Be honest about what you're yet to do - perhaps there's a perfect partner out there to help.
Invest in Green Accreditation
Certification or accreditation can boost your reputation & credibility but can also offer supportive help to guide your future improvements:
There are lots out there! B Corp is often top of the list but hard going for a micro. Try EQM.org or sector specific badges that will help you shine.
Don't forget ISO accreditation often builds in good sustainable practice and is a great place to start.
Share certifications proudly to encourage your peers & to build trust with customers.
Use simple Carbon Trackers to get you started and share progress.
Don't forget free resources like SMEClimate Hub for support.
Inside Simply Club, we support micro business all year round, including a clear sustainability pathway that provides simple steps and community encouragement. Find out more at simplygreatbritain.co.uk
